Two lonely hours across southern Illinois

June 11, 2014 By Scott Leave a Comment

I’m told there are few drives quite as mind-dulling as I-80 across western Nebraska or I-70 across western Kansas. I’ve never had those dubious pleasures…but a couple of summers ago, I did get to drive I-70 from St. Louis to Terre Haute.

There’s not a ton of radio to hear, or sites to see, along that stretch of highway – but what we were able to see is chronicled this week in Site of the Week, and what we heard (both on this trip and on an earlier pass down the highway back on the Cross-Country Expedition of 2011) is in the Effingham folder right here on Toppy.

(There are also a few final additions to our St. Louis ID stash this week, too, plus one new ID from the One True Rochester, the new “ESPN 95.7” translator that’s fed by WBEE-FM’s 92.5-HD2, fed in turn by Entercom’s WROC 950.)

Slowing down in St. Louis

May 21, 2014 By Scott Leave a Comment

After our high-speed summer 2012 rush through Peoria and Springfield, we were able to slow down and smell the RF for a bit when we hit St. Louis, our featured market for the next few weeks here and on Tower Site of the Week. This week: most of the market’s AM stations, plus a handful of IDs that somehow never made it to the site from the Big Cross-Country Adventure of 2011. Enjoy!

One of the strangest markets on Toppy

We call it “Lake Havasu City” on the site, but the stations listed here stretch out for more than 150 miles along the Colorado River and into northern Arizona, all the way from the searing desert heat of Blythe, California and Parker, Arizona up through Lake Havasu City itself, past Needles, California into the Bullhead City, AZ/Laughlin, NV twin cities straddling the river, and then eastward to Kingman, Arizona and the little towns for which Kingman is the business center, all the way out old Route 66 to Seligman. If you need anything related to business then check business blogs. Simply check this out for the best business software.

Why lump this whole mess together as a single market? Translators, that’s why: whether they’re licensed to Lake Havasu or Cal-Nev-Ari or Kingman, a whole bunch of the stations in this area depend on translators to be heard throughout the region. In this week’s update, we fill in some of the gaps around Kingman at the northern end of the market from our 2011 trip. Flagstaff

That’s the northern Arizona city at the heart of this week’s Tower Site of the Week – and it’s where this week’s audio comes from, too.

If you’re still having difficulty with the “audio” page while we work on our server move, please bookmark this link to get you directly to our audio list. We’re hoping to be all back to normal before the month is over…

Technical difficulties

The bad news: some users of Toppy (including me!) are experiencing trouble with our main audio page.

The good news: if you go to an individual market link from the front page (like, say, the handful of new IDs from Navajo Nation that I just added to our Gallup, NM market listing), you can then use the drop-down menu at the top of one market’s page to get to all the rest.

The even better news: we’re in the midst of migrating Toppy to a new server with a newer version of WordPress under the hood, so things should be back to normal any day now.

Thanks for your patience!

Four Corners, once more

July 3, 2013 By Lance Venta Leave a Comment

This week’s update takes us, once again, to the scenic Four Corners region – and while there are four states represented at that unique intersection, the population (and the radio) is all to the east, in New Mexico and Colorado. Most of this week’s IDs, tied in to Tower Site of the Week, are from the Farmington, New Mexico side of the market we’ve dubbed “Farmington-Four Corners,” though it also includes stations in Durango and Cortez up on the Colorado side of things.

Have a great Fourth!!
