THE LILAC CITY – SPOKANE, WASHINGTON

November 22, 2009 By Bill Leave a Comment

Which city is nicknamed the “Lilac City?” Well, there are at least two good answers. There are two cities called the “Lilac City.” One is Rochester, New York and the other is this week’s featured city, Spokane, Washington. The Spokane market also includes several stations from the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho area.

I am excited about presenting clips from Spokane as it is my native town. I was born there, grew up there, and graduated from high school there. Maybe I am a bit biased, but for me anyway, it is the best place on earth.

You will find about new 75 clips from Spokane and vicinity dating from as early as 1952 and ending in 2008. I also included a handful of stations from Colville, Sandpoint, Newport, and St. Maries, which are all located outside of the immediate Spokane area.

I hope you enjoy.

FEATURED SOUND: KNEW 790 SPOKANE

November 15, 2009 By Bill Leave a Comment

As some of you may know, I am a radio station historian, and in the process of doing my research some folks kindly provided some interesting historical audio clips of stations in Spokane. This time, I would like to present a clip provided by Paul Quam (look down almost halfway down the page for his blurb), someone who has been around the radio scene in Spokane since the 1950’s. Paul has done a lot of work restoring a numerous recordings associated with the history of Spokane. The clip is from radio station KNEW 790 in Spokane from 1952. It might be a production cut, but Paul assures me that it was played on the station.

CHARM CITY SPECIAL PART 2

November 15, 2009 By Bill Leave a Comment

With today’s upload it looks like all stations currently in the Charm City (Baltimore) market are now represented on Toppy. There are a two or three HD’s which do not “properly” ID and I am not sure how to handle them.  For one station, the HD channel is there, but there is no audio. Obviously, that one can not be posted here… That is why there are a couple of obvious holes. Yikes!

This week, I also created a new “market.” It is Annapolis, Maryland. Although most of the stations, especially FM are rimshots for both Baltimore, MD and for Washington, DC, and a “sub-market” for both cities, I think there are enough stations serving mainly Annapolis, that it deserves its own separate market. There are three AM stations, and three FM stations listed for this market. Take a look.

Next week I will present Part 1 of the Lilac City. Try to guess which city. I am sure Scott knows. No fair cheating by doing a web search.

CHARM CITY SPECIAL PART 1

“There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.”

“A long journey begins with the first step.”

For my first major submission, I am starting with stuff from home base, Baltimore. I just finished uploading for some AM stations. The FMers will come later.

There are some earlier ones in my collection, but unfortunately they don’t make the time cut.

Enjoy

New to Toppy!

November 9, 2009 By Bill 4 Comments

I am looking forward to positively contributing to tophour.com and more importantly, having fun! For a test run, I took the liberty of posting one of my “vintage” clips. It is from Aberdeen, Washington and was recorded in 1992. The reason for selecting it? It was the top one on my list alphabetically.

Please bear with me as I learn the ropes and get my schedule straight.
