One of the largest markets that’s never really had much Toppy love is Detroit, Michigan – and that’s odd, since it’s only a few hours away from your editor’s alternate home base (and Blaine’s home home base) in lovely northeast Indiana.
Indeed, there’s a whole panoply of interesting radio markets within a day’s drive of Fort Wayne on the Michigan side, and last summer we had a chance to at least poke into a few of them, including two quickie trips up to Detroit to try to catch a Tigers game. (Try #1 ended in a rainout, which may explain the lightning crashes heard on a couple of the AM IDs here.)
There’s much more Michigan buried deep in our archives, and in the coming months we’ll try to dig out some tapes with Detroit IDs as far back as the early 1990s. Meanwhile, enjoy a whole batch of the Detroit AM dial that’s never been heard here on Toppy. (And did you know that the Detroit AM dial boasts more total towers than any other market in the country, thanks to a slew of very complex AM DAs, including several with nine towers?)
Your journey begins at…um…right here.
