The trip I took over this past Memorial Day weekend took me through a number of markets, and I rolled tape as I drove down the road. The result? We have new entries from Bowling Green, KY, Charleston, WV, Elizabethtown, KY (making its Toppy debut), Huntington, WV, Lexington, KY, Louisville, KY, and Morehead, KY (also debuting here with this update.)
A few notes: landing the WAMZ/Louisville ID surprised me, as I didn’t expect to be able to land anything from that market along my path (I could get plenty of Louisville stations in the car, but I didn’t expect to pull in anything with my portable Sony radio/tape recorder.) The 590 WVLK ID out of Lexington doesn’t sound like an AM recording… because I actually pulled it from simulcasting 102.3 WCYN-FM (which had a buried ID at the :53 after the hour mark, which is listed as well in the Lexington section.) And as for the Lexington-to-Huntington stretch of I-64, I was reminded yet again of how few choices there are on the radio in that range. Morehead State may be a funny name for a college, but it is in an isolated area of Kentucky, to say the least.
Yeah, I just moved from Morehead after going to school up there for three years. Its not a fun place radio wise. It is a beautiful little town though.
