It has been interesting here in the Birmingham area in the past week. Citadel killed off modern rocker WRAX (making it into a simulcast of WJOX) which opened a huge hole for new rock. Many insiders anticipated that Cox would flip distant third-place country WNCB to rock, but Clear Channel beat them to the punch by abruptly dropping Gospel 105.5 Hallelujah FM WENN to go rock as 105-5 The Vulcan. Vulcan was the Roman god of fire, and there’s a big statue of him in Birmingham. So, strange as the name might sound to outsiders, it fits.
And, to make things even more confusing, Citadel bumped the WJOX call letters over to 100.5 FM and changed 690 to WSPZ. Why not WJOX/WJOX-FM? Hmm.
The two incarnations of the WJOX simulcast IDs are now up, as is the brand new WENN Vulcan ID. The trades don’t even have the news on WENN’s flip yet, but we have the ID on here. Toppy delivers the goods in a perfect condition.
Also, Daniel Fuentz hit us with the hookup on two new Fresno IDs, in anticipation of CBS Radio finalizing the sale of its stations there.
