What’s the most popular ID file? The March 2005 ID for WCBS-FM/New York, contributed by Scott Fybush.
Why don’t you have more IDs from (insert market here)? Simply because nobody’s sent them in. There’s an insane number of markets that we don’t have even one ID from, and there are tons more that have a few IDs, but don’t really come close to representing the market. Wanna help (hint, hint)? Well, since you brought it up, why all the limitations on what’s acceptable for posting? The programming around the ID is crucial because how an ID is used in the context of the station is infinitely more interesting than four letters and a city name. Is it shoved between spots, dumped between songs without any production or the focus of a cool imaging piece (or something else)? Context is important. The tech specs (MP3 bitrate, stereo, etc.) are important so that we get the highest quality sound possible. We do down-convert right now, but as server space and bandwidth becomes cheaper, we’re going to post the MP3s in all their high-bitrate glory. So, we want to have the best possible source files. And the month and year helps create even more of a context, because the sound of a station changes so much over the course of a year that being able to pinpoint when ID ran can give some clues to that evolution. And the reason we don’t make exceptions? Because when we did, we stopped getting what we wanted. There’d be no surrounding programming, or it’d be a crappy bitrate MP3 or we’d get something like “in 1992 or early 1993, I think.” So in the interests of the quality of the site, we started actually maintaining our own standards.

How come you don’t do individual contributor pages, like the aircheck sites? Quite simply, we don’t have time. Running this thing is a huge time commitment for both Lou and I, and while it’s a labor of love, there is a limit to what we can conceivably do. I have, however, decided to start a Contributor Links section on the Links page. If you’ve contributed IDs and have a personal site you’d like linked, please e-mail me the info. It’s not a major priority right now, but it will get done. (I’ve also started to go back and strip the links off the individual sound files. Just doesn’t look right visually.)
